ADA, Ohio – Despite holding a sizeable 8-3 advantage at the break, Otterbein needed a strong second half to hold off Ohio Northern for the 14-11 win.Â
The Cardinals now improve to 7-3 in their Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) only schedule, while the Polar Bears fall to 4-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Otterbein took a commanding five goal lead after the first 13 minutes of game time, with
Cameron Finnegan scoring twice in the flurry of scores. ONU finally answered but
Lauren Newkirk added another soon after. Avary Snyder provided a quick two goal run for the Polar Bears, scoring just over a minute apart, to pull the hosts within three at 6-3.
The Cardinals wrapped up the half with two unanswered scores coming from
Macey Buchanan and
Emily Willms, her second score of the half, to give the Cards a comfortable 8-3 lead at the break.
The second half started with a Cardinal score just over two minutes in from Newkirk. The sides traded goals over the next three minutes but Otterbein still led comfortably at 10-4. ONU found its offensive rhythm and scored five unanswered to claw its way back to a one goal deficit at 10-9 with 19:33 on the game clock.
Otterbein buried the hopes of a Polar Bear comeback though, quickly after a timeout the Cards netted three straight goals to pull away for the hard-fought road win.
