BEXLEY, Ohio – An absolutely dominant rivalry victory was delivered by the Otterbein football team Friday night just across town, pounding host Capital by a lopsided final count of 47-10 inside Bernlohr Stadium.
The Cardinals, finally getting into the win column during this odd/shortened spring campaign, exploded for 34 points in the first half and never looked back. Capital remains winless on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Otterbein marched 70 yards (in under four minutes) on its opening drive, taking an early lead and never trailing in the contest.
Â
- Capital only trailed 14-10 midway through the second quarter. The Crusaders scored their lone touchdown on 4th and Goal, and then kicked a FG (despite the drive going for -3 yards) after Otterbein dropped the snap on a punt sequence.
Â
- The Cardinals put the game away with a wild flurry to culminate the first half, beginning with a TD connection from Bryce Hall to Reed Tucker and then Mitch Moyer punching in another short rushing score with 1:36 on the clock.
Â
- Carlos Alamo then came up with a timely interception, which eventually led to Jalan Minney making an acrobatic 21-yard touchdown grab near the back pylon on the final play before intermission.
Â
- Otterbein left little doubt in the outcome during the third quarter, as Jordan Bost-Floyd shifted around for an impressive 34-yard catch and run in the opening minutes Backfield mate punctuated the scoring midway through the frame, and the Cards coasted from there.
Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Otterbein finished with a 370-92 edge in total offense, 26-4 advantage in first downs and possessed the ball for a whopping 38:22 of game time.
Â
- Hall went 27 of 36 for 293 yards and three scores. Almost all of that damage came before the break.
Â
- Moyer and Muhammad both had a pair of rushing scores.
Â
- Fred Hardgrove, a defensive back who started the opener at QB, caught four passes in the game while also ripping off a 61-yard kick return.
Â
- Sophomore linebacker Ethan Tackett had himself a game, posting a team-high seven tackles (two for loss) to go along with a sack, forced fumble and recovery. The defense limited Capital to just 1 of 13 on third down.
Â
- Punter Adyn Snyder averaged over 41 yards per attempt.
Â
RIVALRY UPDATE:
- Otterbein has now won seven of the last nine matchups in this series, averaging more than 36 points per game in the stretch.
Â
- Both Capital victories have occurred after wild plays… The Crusaders won (42-41) in 2016 following an unusual illegal-batting penalty, then escaped Westerville (23-19) two years later when the Cards fumbled at the goal line in the closing seconds and the clock expired.
Â
UP NEXT:Â Otterbein is scheduled to play in an Ohio Athletic Conference "Divisional Crossover Game" next Friday evening. Opponent and other details are still to be determined.
