WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Men's Soccer collected another victory on Saturday night, this time silencing the visiting Thunder of Trine University, 2-0.
Now 5-0 on the season, the Cardinals are off to their best start under head coach
Jason Griffiths. Meanwhile, Trine slips to 3-3 on the year.
It didn't take long for the Cardinal's physical style of play to take over the contest; just 38 minutes in,
Liam Heard was able to draw a free-kick opportunity after an aggressive play on the ball. Heard would take the free-kick and send a high pass into the box; there to collect it was fellow captain
Nathan Neal, who used his head to beat the Trine goalie in the top right corner.
Otterbein would take the 1-0 lead into the break, outshooting the Thunder 9-3 after the first half of action.
Andrew McIlvoy had a relatively quiet first half in the net; the senior goalie was called upon to make one save… a big one on a penalty kick.
After a choppy start to the second half plagued by yellow cards, the Cardinals earned a penalty kick opportunity after a hard foul in the Trine box.
Will Isaac came on to take the PK and buried it for the second score of the evening.
Otterbein held on to the 2-0 lead with its strong defense and physical play in the midfield, holding a commanding 18-7 shot advantage when time expired. The Cardinals also had an 18-8 tally in the foul category.
Men's Soccer will put its unbeaten record on the line Wednesday night when they welcome Ohio Wesleyan to Memorial Stadium for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
