WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Women's Soccer hit the field for the first time this fall after Wednesday's match with Denison was canceled. The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead but ultimately fell after a back-and-forth battle, 3-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Due to unforeseen circumstances, Jada Leyland, a defender, made her first college appearance in goal for the Cardinals.
- She was thrown into action early, with Case Western firing off seven shots in the first half; she made four saves on five shots on target.
- Anjuli Anderson picked things up where she left off, scoring the first of the fall in the 28th minute, thanks to a nice drop-off pass from Morgan Somers.
- CWRU answered soon after, though, when Anika Washburn, a 2019 D3Soccer.com second-team All-American, beat Leyland in the top left corner.
- The two sides hit the locker rooms with things locked up at 1-1.
- Washburn got things started in the second half for the Spartans when she tallied her second goal of the night just five minutes into play.
- After an unusual play gave the Cardinals a free kick from five yards out, Mackenzie Koons tapped a pass to Delaney Earl, who scored her first of the season to bring it back to a 2-2 score.
- A minute later, the Spartans found the winner and held off a great scoring chance with just 15 seconds left to hand the Cards their first loss since November 9, 2019.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- In her first collegiate start in goal, Leyland made four saves on seven shots. The Spartans held a 12-5 shot advantage.
- Mackenzie Koons and Morgan Somers both recorded their first career points in a Cardinal uniform.
UP NEXT:
