Tough Third Quarter Dooms Cardinals at No. 19 Marietta

Box Score

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Cardinals fell victim to a second-half run by a nationally-ranked team on the road Wednesday night, watching host Marietta pull away after a halftime deadlock to claim the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) showdown.

The Pioneers, ranked No. 19 in the latest D3hoops.com national poll, broke a 30-30 stalemate at intermission to eventually find breathing room for a 70-55 triumph. Marietta keeps pace with John Carroll and Baldwin Wallace atop the league standings, with all three schools ranked at the moment.

WHAT WENT DOWN:
  • A back-and-forth opening half featured six lead changes, with the entire second frame being a one-possession battle.

  • Kathleen DeCarlo accounted for nearly half of Otterbein's scoring prior to the break, posting 13 points off the bench.

  • Marietta came exploding out with an 18-0 run to begin the third quarter, holding the Cardinals scoreless for over five minutes of game time.

  • Otterbein eventually stopped the bleeding and attempted the climb back, but mustered just six points before the final period. The Cards unfortunately never got within single digits again.

BOX SCORE NOTABLES:
  • DeCarlo (13) and Claire Radabaugh (10) reached double figures for Otterbein, which shot 38 percent collectively for the game.

  • Marietta had five players between 8-13 points, shooting 47 percent for the night.

  • The Pioneers held a commanding 43-19 rebounding advantage, and doubled up the Cardinals in paint scoring at 34-16.

  • Otterbein went 13 of 19 at the free-throw line while the Pios settled at a perfect 10 for 10.
