BEXLEY, Ohio – Both sides battled for 90 full minutes Saturday afternoon inside Bernlohr Stadium, but neither Capital or Otterbein could find the back of the net in the second half to break a 1-1 tie in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OOAC) opener for both teams.
The Cardinals, now 6-1-1 overall, faced an early deficit but got on the scoreboard just prior to intermission. The Comets now stand with a 1-5-2 record this fall after the draw.
In light of the deadlock, Otterbein retains possession of "The Oar" that was recently added (this time last year) to the Roush Auto Rivalry Showdown between the schools.
Capital hit the scoreboard first approaching the midway point of the opening half, when Zade Awad finished a double assist from Jack Francisco and Samuel Yocum.
The Cardinals, trailing for the first time since way back on September 10 at Case Western, took the next 20-ish minutes to push forward before ultimately securing an equalizer
Will Isaac hit the scoring column for the third-consecutive match, netting his sixth of the year overall at the 40:09 mark to knot things back up. Otterbein went into halftime with a 9-5 shot margin.
Neither side was able to crack through for good after the break, with each team attempting two corner kicks and the Cards holding a narrow 5-4 edge in shots.
Carter Ely had a rip in the 73rd minute that was saved by Capital goalkeeper Connor Sexton, and a shot from Isaac less than two minutes later missed high and right.
The Cardinals walked away with a 14-9 shot advantage (7-1 on goal), with Sexton making six saves.
Casey Thompson did not have any on the other end.
Four yellow cards were issued in the match, two going to both teams.
Otterbein gets back on the pitch middle of next week for another key OAC matchup, taking on Ohio Northern come Wednesday at 7 p.m.
