WESTERVILLE, Ohio - Capital delivered a game-winning goal with only 10 seconds remaining on the clock to walk away victorious (2-1) inside Memorial Stadium in the last contest of Homecoming. The Cardinals battled back the entirety of the second half to tie things up, only to have the Comets decisively score with no time left for Otterbein to come back.Â
The Cardinals break their four-game winning streak and now sit 4-4-1 overall, while the Comets are now 5-2-1 and start Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play on a high note.
Upon the Cards' loss, Capital claims first possession of "The Oar" that was recently added to the Roush Auto Rivalry Showdown between the schools this time last year. Otterbein took initial control after last year's 1-0 triumph.
The contest started as any rivalry match would... high energy and competitive. Both teams fought for the opportunity to score for the initial third of the half, but the Comets found themselves on the scoreboard first during the 36th minute. Avery Hart found herself scoring for Capital, placing a ball too far away for
Ella Schwertfager to reach and earning a lead for the Comets.
The Cardinals found themselves trailing for the remainder of the half, unable to find an equalizer before intermission.
Upon returning to the field, both teams seemed to remain in a stalemate. Otterbein pushing hard for a goal, and Capital refusing to allow it. A decent percentage of play took place in the midfield. A flurry of offensive opportunities came for Otterbein but the Cards couldn't quite convert.Â
Otterbein's outlook changed in the 88th minute when continuous pressure finally proved too much for the Capital defense.
Anjuli Anderson claimed credit for the goal, which was assisted by
Camryn Earl after the freshman played a nice pass from the corner.
A hopeful Cardinal 11 lined back up for kickoff, only to witness Capital score a devastating goal in the 90th minute. A foul whistled on Otterbein led to a Capital free kick, which was punched out of bounds (on the end line) by Schwertfager to result in a corner kick...
The incoming ball was redirected back into a mix of players from both teams inside the 18-yard box. Taylor Marcum stopped all hope of a tie with a shot near the left post that flew just past Schwertfager. Otterbein simply didn't have enough time to rally back, with only a mere 10 seconds remaining on the board.
In addition to the scoreboard, the Comets out-shot the Cardinals 15-11 with 10 of those landing on frame... compared to Otterbein's four. Capital also managed two more corner kicks than the Cardinals, an outcome that hasn't shown up recently in Otterbein contests.
Schwertfager made a season-high right saves for the Cards while counterpart Lauren White had a trio on the other end.
The Cards will find themselves on the road as they continue OAC play next week, taking on Ohio Northern at 7 p.m.
