NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – The Otterbein women's tennis team picked right back up where it left off in the fall Friday evening, topping host Transylvania by a team score of 6-3 at Top Seed Tennis Club.
The Cardinals, now 4-0 on the season, launch spring season in the win column and beat Transy for a third-straight time.
Unfortunately, on the men's side, a shorthanded Cardinal group came up short by the same margin… falling 6-3 against the Pioneers after readjusting the lineup a bit.
WOMEN'S RECAP:
Both sides took an early doubles matchup, with Otterbein's No. 1 tandem of
Erin Storrer and
Emma Henson prevailing 8-4. Transylvania emerged by the same scores at the second level, which featured
Lillia Walter and
Madi Mueller for the Cards.
Otterbein walked away with an early 2-1 edge following the third doubles showdown…
Julia Gillin and
Rachelle Moses displayed some nice grit, securing a narrow 8-7 triumph that included a 9-7 tiebreak.
The Cards parlayed that momentum into singles action by taking three of the top four courts. Storrer and Walter won rather comfortably while Moses had to work extra at the No. 4 position. Nevertheless, she ended on top after lengthy lines of 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 with an 11-9 deciding stretch in extra points.
Cassady Shough came up short in fifth singles but
Aubrey McMahon left little doubt in the team score with a 6-2, 6-3 victory herself.
MEN'S RECAP:
The Cardinals battled admirably despite missing three of their usual top six, claiming a doubles matchup from
Boban Mihajlov and
Nate Stevens(8-3) in the third spot.
Jake McDivitt and
Tom Ohler settled just shy by an 8-6 tally on the first line, and
Dylan Shook/
Armando DiMichaelangelo just didn't quite have enough on their court.
Ohler (2) and Shook (3) racked up wins through individual matchups… but McDivitt, Mihajlov and Stevens came up short despite competitive sequences on their courts.
McDivitt (first singles) and Mihajlov (fourth) both lost with flip-flopped frames of 7-5 and 6-3. It marked Otterbein's first loss of the young schedule after beating Ohio Wesleyan and Mount Vernon in the fall.
MOVING FORWARD:
Both teams will be back in action next Saturday afternoon, hosting PSU-Behrend inside the Clements Recreation Center beginning at 1 p.m.
