CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – It was a tough opening day at the NCAA Championships for first-time qualifier
Jarrod Setliff on Friday, as the senior endured a pair of losses and elimination from the national event.
Competing at 197 pounds, Setliff recently became Otterbein's third NCAA participant in program history after taking third at the Central Regional.
He opened the tournament against No. 1 ranked Beau Yineman (UW-Oshkosh), and was forced into the consolation bracket after a tough 10-0 decision.
Yineman, improving to 29-2 this season with the victory, held a tight 4-0 lead entering the final period before creating separation. He later advanced into the semifinals.
Setliff then had a lengthy regrouping session before evening wrestle-backs started, where he took the mat against Mauro Pellot from Alvernia. Setliff scored an early takedown and ultimately led 4-3 with one minute remaining…
Pellot responded with a reversal for a 5-4 lead, and then secured a pin with just 17 seconds left to end the bout.
Despite the losses, Setliff rests with a career record of 63-30 as a 2x all-league selection in the competitive Ohio Athletic Conference.
