WESTERVILLE, Ohio – It will be a tough result to swallow for the Otterbein men's lacrosse team, which unfortunately had its home opener spoiled Wednesday night at the hands of Oberlin College inside Memorial Stadium.
The Yeomen, which trailed practically the entire game, finished on a five-goal run to steal an entertaining result from the Cardinals. Otterbein led 5-4 approaching two minutes left before the visitors netted three in the final 2:11 of game time.
HOW IT WENT DOWN:
- Both sides traded initial goals within a 14-second span of one another in the first quarter. Nick Asuan then gave Otterbein a 2-1 lead just a few minutes later.
Â
- Fans would have to wait almost 20 minutes of game time for the next score, which also came off Asuan's stick with just 2:27 to play before the break.
Â
- Each side would secure a tally in the closing 95 seconds before intermission, with Max Cha gaining temporary momentum for Oberlin before Aidan Moore took it right back (off a nice pass from Ty Forney).
Â
- Otterbein then held a 5-2 lead early in the third quarter after Nick Clay's second goal. Oberlin scored less than two minutes later, and the two-goal cushion would remain intact well into the fourth…
Â
- The Yeomen closed within 5-4 midway through, and didn't find an equalizer until Niko Maheras brought things even with 2:11 showing on the board. An Otterbein penalty on the goal provided the visitors with a potential man-up opportunity…
Â
- Oberlin won the next faceoff, and Cha would deliver the game-winner with just 94 seconds left in regulation. The Yeomen added an insurance goal in the closing seconds.
Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Oberlin beats Otterbein for the first time in four tries, with its last win coming back in 2013. The Yeomen held a 42-28 edge in total shots.
Â
- Both goalies were impressive. Zach Groene made 13 saves for Otterbein in his return after missing spring break, while Eugene Kang had 11 on the other end of the field.
Â
- Connor Quinn won 11 of 16 faceoffs for the visitors.
Â
- Moore had a three-point night on the home side, which committed 23 turnovers compared to just 14 by the opposition.
Â
- Both teams were nearly identical on clear attempts, each successfully advancing up the field 19 times.
Â
LOOKING AHEAD:
- The Cards will have 10 days off before the next contest, hosting Muskingum come March 26 for the beginning of conference play.
