Willms' Record-Setting Day Sparks Victory over BW

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Behind a star-studded performance from junior Emily Willms, who almost outscored Baldwin Wallace by herself, the Otterbein women's lacrosse team pulled away to hand the Yellow Jackets a 21-12 loss Friday afternoon at a sunny (but very windy) Memorial Stadium.

THE NOTABLES:
  • Willms poured in a new program single-game record 10 goals, including three straight down the stretch of the fourth quarter to cement the game. She surpasses her previous best of nine, set earlier this season at Muskingum. In addition, Willms now has 61 on the year to leap ahead of former single-season record holder Abby Smoot (now an assistant coach) at 58.

  • The Cardinals top BW for a third-straight meeting, after claiming both matchups last spring in the conference-only slate.

  • Freshman goalie Maggie Nance was strong in the cage with 11 stops, and has now amassed double-digit saves in all but two contests this year.

  • Five total players had multi-goal performances. Macey Buchanan netted four while Logan Fox tallied a hat trick.

  • There was a goal scored in the last five seconds of three different quarters.

HOW IT PLAYED OUT:
  • Otterbein led 5-3 after the first quarter, but extended the lead before halftime thanks to seven goals in the second frame.

  • BW appeared motivated coming out of intermission, scoring twice in the opening minute, and only trailed 15-10 near the end of that period.

  • The Cards found a key run to punctuate the third, however, as man-down goals from Willms and Lexie Van Cleef brought all the momentum back to the home side.

  • Willms' final goal pushed the margin to double digits, as the final victor was never in doubt across the last quarter.
THE AFTERMATH:
  • Otterbein gets back to .500 on the season, now standing 6-6 overall and 4-2 against the OAC. Baldwin Wallace is now 5-8 as a team and 3-3 within conference play.
LOOKING AHEAD:
  • After the Easter weekend, Otterbein will get back to action with a road game Wednesday night at Marietta. Opening draw is schedule for 6 p.m.
