WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Otterbein improved to 3-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference play after taking a pair from Heidelberg on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals rallied for a walk-off win (5-4) in game one and capped off the series sweep with a 5-2 win in the finale. With the wins, Otterbein improved to a perfect 6-0 on its home field this season.
GAME 1 RECAP: (W 5-4)
Freshman
Isa Lewis opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly that drove in sophomore
Caroline Heller in the second. With runners at the corners, senior
Sami Ange and sophomore
Taylor Baran successfully pulled off a delayed double steal to push the early advantage to 2-0 after two. Senior
Sage Jenkins opened the bottom of the third with a solo shot to left that increased the Cardinal lead.
Graduate starting pitcher
Jess Gunter tossed a no hitter through the first five innings before running into some issues in the sixth. With the scored tied at 3-3, junior
Haylee Ternovan relieved Gunter with one out on the board. The Berg took its first lead of the game on a two-out walk drawn by pinch hitter Murissa Drown.
Despite experiencing some struggles in the sixth, Gunter returned to the circle in the seventh to retire the side in order via two groundouts and a strikeout.Â
Savannah McCoppin kicked off the seventh-inning rally with a one-out single to left center. With runners at first and second now and one down, Heller belted a double to right center that scored McCoppin from second and moved pinch runner
Chloe Clark to third. Following a Heidelberg pitching change, senior
Hannah Lewis drove in Clark with a walk-off sacrifice fly to right field.
Jenkins and Heller combined for four of the team's seven hits, while
Isa Lewis drew two free passes and hit a SAC fly in her three plate appearances. Gunter improved to 6-2 on the year after surrendering two earned runs (4 total) on one hit with three strikeouts and five walks in 6.1 innings.
GAME 2 RECAP: (W 5-2)
After driving in the game-winning run in the opener,
Hannah Lewis' bat stayed hot with a pair of two-run homers in the nightcap. Already ahead 1-0, Lewis blasted her first of two long balls over the center field wall. The senior's first home run of the year also brought in Heller.
Heidelberg shrunk the deficit to 3-1 in the fifth, before a second-consecutive two-run shot by Lewis extended the Otterbein lead to 5-1. The Berg made things interesting in the top of the seventh when they loaded the bases with two outs. After a walk to Meghan Bame pushed across one run, Lewis grabbed a towering fly ball by Emma Dean in right center to seal the Cards' 14th win of the season.
Hannah Lewis drove in four of her team's five runs on two homers. Jenkins,
Megan Payne and
Isa Lewis collected the other three hits. Freshman pitcher
Bryn Grabowski moved to 8-2 inside the circle after allowing two runs on four hits with five strikeouts and three free passes.
ON DECK:
Otterbein (14-4, 3-1 OAC) is back in action this Tuesday (April 5) when they travel to Marietta College for a conference twinbill. Game one is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
