Third-Quarter Run by Undefeated Capital Dooms Cardinals

BEXLEY, Ohio – The Otterbein women's lacrosse tea put forth a valiant effort, but ultimately came up short against undefeated Capital Friday evening in its Roush Auto Rivalry Showdown just a short drive south of campus.

The Comets, emerging by a final score of 19-8, improve themselves to a 14-0 record this season and remain unbeaten against the OAC. They have won all but two games by double digits.

HOW IT WENT DOWN:
  • The game was tied 2-2 midway through the opening period, as Nina Domanik and Emily Willms tallied scores for the Cardinals.

  • Capital, averaging almost 20 goals per game, kicked into gear as the first quarter came to a close. The Comets went on a 7-2 run to end the frame, capped with a man-up goal in the last minute.

  • Otterbein defender Kate Schimmel worked hard to "man-mark" Capital standout Grace Osborn as the game progressed, and it paid dividends in keeping her out of the scoring column for a 45-minute stretch.

  • Both teams netted three goals in the second quarter, as Capital eventually took a 12-7 lead into halftime.

  • The hosts unfortunately broke the game open with a big third quarter, posting a 5-1 scoring edge and creating too steep of a climb back for the Cards.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Capital held a 36-16 shot advantage, including a 29-12 edge on goal.

  • Both sides won 15 draw controls, as Willms and Carli Rigel combined for 11 on the Otterbein side.

  • Rigel delivered a hat trick and Lauren Newkirk had four assists. She now ranks third in the OAC in the category.

  • Brooke Delara had 12 points for the home side, coming on four goals and a whopping eight helpers.

UP NEXT:
  • The Cardinals will have a full week off before hosting Baldwin Wallace on Good Friday at Memorial Stadium. Opening draw is scheduled for noon.
