WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein women's soccer team shrugged off its challenging start to the season and got into the win column Saturday afternoon, using a pair of second-half goals from
Gillian Losey to best Adrian College by a final score of 2-0.
The Cardinals, now 1-3-1 this year, top the Bulldogs for a second-straight meeting after escaping 2-1 last year up in Michigan. Adrian made the NCAA Tournament in 2019 and now currently holds a 3-2-2 record this time around.
A scoreless first half didn't feature much action on either offensive end. Both sides found themselves playing a gritty, physical matchup in the middle of the field and sidelines. Only three total shots and one corner kick was attempted.
Losey, a Dayton transfer back in the lineup after missing three matches due to injury, helped put Otterbein ahead for good in the 60th minute.
Payton Kaufman launched a free kick into the box, which bounced off the head of
Morgan Somers before Losey was there for a redirect.
Adrian worked for an equalizer and had a minute-long flurry with multiple shots at one point down the stretch, but the Cardinal defense stymied all opportunities. Otterbein then went back down to double up its lead on another set piece…
This time, Kaufman sent an outright cross into the attacking zone where Losey finished the insurance goal to recapture all momentum to the home side.
Freshman
Caitlin Drew made her first-career start in goal for the Cardinals and picked up a victory, needing to make just one save in the process.
Both sides were whistled for 14 fouls across the competitive affair.
Otterbein return to action on Tuesday at Kenyon, before hosting Alma on Friday night in a match that has been moved up from the originally scheduled Saturday morning.
