VB: Calvin Bests Otterbein in Sweet 16 Rematch

HOLLAND, Mich. – A rematch of last year's NCAA Sweet 16 ended up with the same result Friday evening, as the No. 5-ranked Calvin Knights beat the No. 11-ranked Otterbein Cardinals in four sets to begin the Hope College Tournament.

Last year, in Calvin's arena, Otterbein took the opening set before the hosts (eventual national runner-up) regrouped to win the next three. This time around, Calvin ended up prevailing by scores of 25-19, 23-25, 25-21, 25-15.

The Cardinals, having dropped back-to-back matches after starting the year 9-0, will look to refocus quickly Saturday as contests with Elmhurt and No. 9-ranked Hope on the slate at DeVose Fieldhouse.

Otterbein used a 6-2 rotation in the first set, jumping out t a 10-7 lead before Calvin took control. The Knights went on a 10-2 run and settled into the match lead.

The Cards then went with a 5-1 lineup moving forward (around setter Carlie Craycraft) and found success in the second frame. Otterbein led 10-7 once again but, this time, was able to keep momentum and hold a 17-11 cushion…

Calvin made a late charge to get within a single points four times (21-20, 22-21, 23-22, 24-23) before a kill via freshman Maddie Mergen gave the set to Otterbein.

Calvin never trailed in the third set despite things remaining close in crunch time. Otterbein was only behind 22-21, but three-straight miscues (service error followed by two attack errors) allowed the Knights to regain a match advantage.

That momentum trickled over into the fourth, where Calvin opened a 9-3 edge and coasted down the stretch. Otterbein did get back within 17-13 temporarily before the Knights countered with an 8-2 run.

Amber Greeley, Kennedy Hoffman and Morgan Hartman combined for 39 kills, all but six for Otterbein. Craycraft ended up with 38 assists while Birdget Oder had 18 digs in the back.

The Cards hit .147 as a team while the Knights posted a .212 effort. Calvin senior Heidi Westra led all players with 18 smacks and freshman setter Alyssa DeVries tallied 40 dimes.
