WESTERVILLE, Ohio - Otterbein scored three times against Adrian to win its third contest in a row Saturday night inside Memorial Stadium.
Otterbein took the field for the first time in a week due to a canceled contest against Ohio Wesleyan. The Cards were slated to take on the Battling Bishops on Wednesday but, due to unplayable field conditions, the match was canceled and has yet to be rescheduled. Following tonight's contest, the Cardinals now sit 5-1 on the season.
Otterbein maintained dominance both offensively and defensively throughout the entirety of the contest and took advantage of its deep bench by subbing in multiple players to assist on the pitch. Seven different Cardinals contributed in adding points to the board, as Will Isaac and Mark Wischmeyer had a play in two of the three goals each.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the ninth minute of play, Isaac found a goal that would set the tone early for the Cardinal offense. Defender Hayden Vu played a long ball from the backfield towards Silver Abraham, who fired a shot off the bounce that just grazed the fingertips of Adrian's keeper. Abraham followed his shot and tapped a short pass to a waiting Isaac, who shot the ball past the remaining Adrian defender.
- The second goal of the contest came in the 22nd minute due to the combined efforts of Wischmeyer, Brenton Molli and Carter Ely, who carried the ball to the corner of the field and sent a cross into the Bulldog 18-yard box. Molli received the ball off his chest and played it right to the foot of Wischmeyer, who quickly buried the ball into the back of the net.
- The final Cardinal goal came early in the second half and, in similar fashion to the previous goal, had a double assist. Isaac placed the ball into Bulldog territory off a cross, where Drew Holman redirected just in front of the goal for Wischmeyer to score his second of the match.
- The Bulldogs did not return home without a goal of their own, however, thanks to Luke Grytza. He scored off a penalty kick that was taken during the 84th minute. Casey Thompson dove to the right side of the net, but Grytza decisively sent the ball to the left side to earn the goal.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Otterbein posted a 19-3 shot margin, with 10 of those attempts landing on frame and just two for the Bulldogs.
- The Cardinal defense prevented any corner kick opportunities for Adrian, while Otterbein earned eight total.
- Despite the fouls sitting even at 7-7, Adrian added two yellow cards while Otterbein finished clean.
- Adrian's Jackson Vacca managed to save seven shots on the night compared to Thompson only needing one.
UP NEXT:
Otterbein will continue play at home, taking on the Denison Big Red during its last non-conference match on Wednesday. The Cards will then take on cross-town rival Capital University just down the road to kick off OAC play on the first of October.
