WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein volleyball team glided forward to 4-0 in Ohio Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night, sweeping Wilmington College by scores of 25-8, 25-9, 25-19 inside the Rike Center.
The Cardinals back to receiving a few votes in the latest AVCA national poll, win their seventh match in a row to now stand 14-7 overall. Otterbein remains the only unbeaten team within the OAC standing approaching mid-October.
HOW IT PLAYED OUT:
- Otterbein began the night on a 12-2 run and coasted in the first set, leading 21-6 in the late stages.
Â
- More of the same played out in the middle frame, where the Cards ballooned a 7-5 lead into a sizeable 22-7 cushion. That stretch was punctuated by a 9-0 run.
Â
- Wilmington traded points and never quit in the third, as the Quakers led 11-10 before Otterbein kicked into gear. The Cards vaulted ahead by way of a 7-0 spurt and kept WC at arm's distance in closing time.
Â
BOX SCORE NOTABLES:
- Otterbein hit .330 for the match and held Wilmington to just a .030 output on the opposite side. It marked the fourth time over .300 this season for the offense.
Â
- A dozen Cardinals had at least one kill on the evening, with Morgan Hartman and Kennedy Hoffman each smacking a match-high nine. They ranked 1-2 atop the leading coming in.
Â
- Makenzie Schellenberger, who switched into the shirt as libero in the third set, finished with a new season-high 17 digs. She then did her selfless, extracurricular part by walking the stands to pick up trash afterward.
Â
- The Cardinals tallied 10 service aces and made sure Wilmington did not have any coming the other way.
Â
SATURDAY TRI-MATCH:
The Cardinals stay at home to close the week, hosting Heidelberg and Kenyon for a tri-match beginning at 10 a.m. Otterbein takes on the 'Berg in league competition to begin the day, followed by both teams squaring up with Kenyon at 12 and 2 p.m.
