OBERLIN, Ohio – Another high-scoring effort propelled the Otterbein men's basketball team to another lopsided non-conference win following a week off, as the Cardinals pulled away in the second half up at Oberlin College to win 92-69.
BASIC BREAKDOWN:
- Otterbein, now 2-0 on the young season, dropped 90 points for the second game in a row behind a pair of balanced halves and a whopping 63% shooting.
Â
- A very competitive game (for roughly 35 minutes) ballooned down the stretch, as the Cards ended the game on a 16-2 run.
Â
- The final margin suddenly became much wider than last year's final result between the schools, where Cam Evans needed to hit a buzzer-beater to help Otterbein escape 58-57 in the Rike Center.
HOW IT PLAYED OUT:
- Both teams shot well offensively prior to intermission, with Oberlin holding a 23-19 lead just over midway through the first half.
Â
- Otterbein then found a groove behind the outside shooting of Alex Hannah and Brock Waits, who combined for the next 17 points and four triple-hits across just four minutes of game time.
Â
- The Cards led by eight at one point down the stretch of the period, but the Yeomen hung close and only trailed 47-42 into the break.
Â
- More offense ensued during the early stages of a second half that saw Otterbein finally expand the gap to three possessions (69-60) with just under nine minutes left. Oberlin, however, stayed close and remained in shouting distance at 75-67 with 5:32 on the clock.
Â
- Otterbein embarked on a lopsided run to end the game, limiting the home side to just two points over that final 5:32 to pull away mightily. The cushion remained single digits until Jack Clement hit a back-breaking trifecta and Waits followed up with a long-range make of his own.
BOX SCORE NOTABLES:
- Clements scored 22 for the second game in a row and Waits had a smooth 16-5-3 off the bench, going a near perfect 6-of-7 from the field.
Â
- Troy Scowden operated well down low with 14 points of his own, missing just one of his seven shots. Evans and Julian Heckman both scored nine, with Heckman's six assists leading all players.
Â
- Oberlin hung tough thanks to 17 offensive rebounds, good enough for a 27-7 edge in second-chance points. Milun Micanovic had 21 and 8 for the Yeomen while Anastasis Spyroglou notched 20 off the bench.
Â
- Four different Cardinals and three-plus assists.
Â
- Oberlin tallied 48 of its 69 points in the paint.
SATURDAY SHOWDOWN:
The Cardinals will return home and welcome nearby Ohio Wesleyan into the Rike this weekend, with opening tip set for 2 p.m.
