Cardinals Split Sunday Duals with John Carroll and Hiram

FULL RESULTS

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – A pair of head-to-head showdowns resulted in a split for the Otterbein wrestling team Sunday afternoon up John Carroll, dropping a 28-12 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) dual with the host Blue Streaks before regrouping to dominate Hiram by a count of 47-6.

Noah Houchins (125), Andrew Sas (141) and Cale Callahan (165) all rested as double winners on the day, which also saw the Cardinals rack up a handful of exhibition victories.

JOHN CARROLL DUAL (L 28-12):

Both sides traded victories in a league matchup that saw the Cardinals leading 12-11 across the midway point and into the heavier weights. Unfortunately, JCU captured the last four bouts to pull away.

Houchins began the day with a forfeit win, and Sas followed shortly thereafter in a workmanlike 9-6 decision. Nathan Leko (149) and Austin Amens (157) dropped narrow/hard-fought decisions before Callahan pushed Otterbein back in front with a W himself.

The Blue Streaks then rallied with three bonus-point victories, before Thomas Lunt held off Billy Reed-Bodey in a 2-1 decision at heavyweight.

In some extra matches, Carter Mottley pinned his opponent in 91 seconds while Bo Branson and Josh Taylor notched decisions.

HIRAM DUAL (W 47-6):

Houchins, Amens and Cormell all won via forfeit to give the Cardinals more than enough breathing room. Sas and Leko achieved technical-fall victories in the early going to leave little doubt in the eventual final, with Sas improving to 9-2 overall this winter.

Callahan also added a tech fall himself, Gary Steele maneuvered his way to a 13-7 decision, and Brandon Thomas (97) pinned his opponent in the second period.

Eric Saddler, Trace Williams and Owen Crabtree all grabbed victories in some extra bouts.

PACK YOUR TRUNKS:

The Cardinals will next head to the annual Kalahari Duals hosted by Heidelberg in Sandusky, with matchups against Augustana, Delaware Valley and nationally-ranked Loras on the slate. All teams will then enjoy access to nearby Kalahari Resorts afterwards.
