Otterbein Falls to Baldwin Wallace in Low-Scoring Battle

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Goals were hard to come by (after the first quarter) for Otterbein in conference play Saturday afternoon, as a stingy Baldwin Wallace defense settled in and ultimately handed the Cardinals a 10-4 loss inside a very windy Memorial Stadium.

HOW IT PLAYED OUT:
  • Both sides began trading goals after five scoreless minutes to begin the day, seeing a combined five goals within the next four minutes…

  • Otterbein held a 2-1 midway through that stretch on a conversion from Aidan Moore, but the Yellow Jackets responded with a four-goal run. BW scored with one second remaining in the period to capture all momentum.

  • Carson Rainone found Nick Clay just 59 seconds into the second quarter to regather the home side, and BW mustered just one itself in the frame to carry a 7-3 lead into the break.

  • A rugged, defensive struggle ensued during the third quarter. BW scored just once near the end of the quarter to carry an 8-3 lead into the fourth.

  • Alex Menendez finally broke a near 30-minute scoreless drought for Otterbein in the fourth, causing a turnover as the Yellow Jackets were trying to clear the ball and quickly scooping up a groundball before firing his point-blank shot home.

  • No scoring would take place over the next 10-ish minutes before Baldwin Wallace added a pair of insurance goals in closing time to expand the final margin.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Otterbein finished with advantages in total shots (36-29) and shots on goal (20-19), only to see BW goalie Joe Storner come up with 16 saves.

  • The Cardinals won 11 of 17 faceoffs behind Eddie McDonald.

  • Kyler Byerly led the visitors with a four-point day.

  • Seven Otterbein players picked up multiple ground balls on the day, led by four on the stick of Cayden Rohe.

  • Luke Farthing made 10 saves in the Cardinal cage.

MOVING FORWARD:
  • Otterbein pushes into more OAC play next week, hitting the road for games at Muskingum and John Carroll.
