Big Sixth Inning Leads to 15-4 Win Over Yeomen

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein baseball team got itself back into the win column after a pair of disappointing results earlier in the week, returning home to work past Oberlin by a score of 15-4 at Fishbaugh Field.

The Cardinals, improving to 19-8 on the year, opened a quick lead in the first inning (before a massive frame in the sixth) to lead from start to finish. Oberlin dips slightly under .500 with the result and now stands 9-11 this spring.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Cardinals plated two runs in the first without a hit, using a double steal and then long sacrifice fly off the bat of Gavin Wolf.

  • The Yeomen were threatening in the top of the second, with runners on the corners and no outs before a wild 5-4-3-2 triple play around the diamond completely flipped the script.

  • Starting pitcher Luke Perigo kept Oberlin off the scoreboard through five innings, allowing his offense to ultimately extend the lead with a nice bottom of the fourth.

  • Jamie Perebzak ripped a single up the middle for Otterbein's first hit of the day, and that snowballed into a nice string of production. Gavin Thompson and Ryan Grant moved the baseball to manufacture runs, sandwiched around a patient at-bat from Zac Taylor before he poked a 2-RBI single to center.

  • The Yeomen hit the board in the fifth with two RBI-singles near the top of the lineup, staying within striking distance at 6-2.

  • Otterbein put the game away in the bottom of the sixth, bringing across seven runs (before the visitors could record an out) and eventually plating nine in the frame. Wolf had a 2-RBI single in the stretch.
STATS THAT MATTERED:
  • Perigo earned his second win of the year with 5.2 innings on the hill, posting six strikeouts and only scattering four hits.

  • The Cardinals needed just four hits the entire day to achieve the 15 runs, and Kody Haubeil added a hard-hit single in the seventh.

  • Otterbein drew 11 walks altogether, translating to three-plus RBI from Taylor (4), Grant and Wolf.

  • Noah Gruver, Kylan Kortokrax and Joey Conrad took it home in relief out of the bullpen, with Oberlin tacking on a few runs in its final at-bat.
UP NEXT:
  • The Cardinals will get back into OAC play this coming weekend with a scheduled doubleheader against Heidelberg at Peaceful Valley. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
