WESTERVILLE, Ohio – It was a back-and-forth showdown that unfortunately ended with a disappointing result Wednesday night for the Otterbein women's lacrosse team, dropping a 14-13 overtime game with Marietta inside Memorial Stadium.

Both teams now sit 2-2 in OAC play with just two games left in the league's regular season.

HOW IT PLAYED OUT:
  • A high-scoring first quarter broke out with each team netting five goals… ultimately seeing ties at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 leading into the midway point of the second quarter.

  • Otterbein would carry an 8-7 lead into halftime before widening that margin to 11-8 with a strong start to the third, which included the first college goal by Kate Machuca.

  • Marietta caught fire to end that period and bridged momentum into the fourth, striking a five-goal run to turn the tables and find themselves leading 13-11 entering the final minutes.

  • Down but certainly not out, the Cards regrouped with consecutive goals from Nina Domanik (3:56) and Carli Rigel (2:58) that forced yet another deadlock.

  • Otterbein goalie Maggie Nance would make two critical caves in the final 70-ish seconds to maintain the stalemate and allow extra time.

  • The Pioneers would escape just over a minute into that overtime period, earning a free-position attempt and watching Mallory Wiles convert the winner.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Emily Willms led all players with six goals (for the second-straight game) on a healthy 17 shots. Wiles tallied five herself for the visitors.

  • The Pioneers went 5 for 8 on the free position while Otterbein settled at a 3 for 7 output.

  • Rigel and Lauren Newkirk combined for another eight points within the Cardinal offense.

  • Nance made a dozen saves.

  • Most team stat categories were nearly identical in the tightly-contested game.
UP NEXT:
  • The Cardinals will travel up north to play Mount Union this coming Saturday at 1 p.m.
