Cards Sweep Capital in Rivalry Doubleheader

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Oar remains in Westerville and the recent dominance against Capital has only continued for the Otterbein baseball team, which earned another sweep in the rivalry series across Sunday afternoon at Clowson Field.

Scores of 13-4 and 4-2 were posted this time around by the Cardinals, who received six multi-hit efforts in the opening game before a pitching gem from senior Jackson Peloquin in the rematch. Otterbein now stands 16-6 overall and gets back to 2-2 in OAC play with the triumphs.

The Cards are now 18-3 against Capital over the last 21 meetings, including six-straight victories.

GAME 1 RECAP:
  • Noah Sprowls absolutely crushed a ball for a solo home run in the first inning, and the Cards eventually held a 5-0 lead midway through the second after moving the baseball around nicely. Gavin Thompson joined Sprowls with a solo blast in the third.

  • The Comets plated runs in a couple frames and remained within striking distance late, trailing just 6-2 after seven full.

  • Otterbein then put the game away with a huge offensive sequence in the eighth, kickstarted by RBI-doubles from Brayden Carter and Jamie Perebzak and furthered via the wild pitch, passed ball and double-steal featuring Haruki Tada and Brayden Quincel.

  • Freshman Luke Walter went six strong on the hill for his third pitching win, allowing just one earned run over 109 pitches.

  • Six Cardinals tallied multi-hit games, led by a 3 for 4 effort from Ryan Grant in the nine hole.
GAME 2 RECAP:
  • Gavin Wolf and Quincel started the rematch with RBI in the first inning, and that margin would be sufficient for Jackson Peloquin on the mound…

  • The senior would get more run support thanks to a solo homer from Zach Franz in the second.

  • Peloquin held the Comets to just a pair of hits over the first six innings, and ended up allowing just one earned run over eight strong. He improves to 3-0 this spring with the result.

  • Braydon McCloskey came on in relief after one batter in the ninth, overcoming an early single to notch a double play and his fourth save this year.

  • Sprowls had another two hits for an Otterbein lineup that posted 25 over the two games.
LOOKING AHEAD:
  • The Cards will have the middle of this next week off before hosting Mount Union for a key OAC doubleheader on Good Friday.
