WESTERVILLE, Ohio - The Otterbein University softball team picked up a doubleheader split against non-conference opponent Mount Saint Joseph University Wednesday afternoon. The Cardinals rebounded from the game-one defeat (7-1) to earn an 8-5 win against the Lions in the second contest, which ended early in the top of the sixth inning due to darkness.

The Cardinals struggled to get the bats moving in the first game but turned the heat on in the second to take a split from the Lions.

Megan Payne added yet another homerun to her stats during the fourth inning to claim the solo run in the first contest. While freshman Emma Calkins not only earned her first collegiate home run in the second game but made it a grand slam that gave the Cardinals the extra edge to hold off the Lions from making a comeback.

GAME 1

  • MSJ built an early lead in game one, securing four runs in the first inning, and earned two more in the second. The Lions stayed the course behind Casey Kemp, who earned her 11th win of the season inside the circle after staying nearly perfect,

  • The Cardinals couldn't quite put a hit on the board in the first three innings against Kemp, but found two by the end of the contest against Peri Foust.

  • The Lions put nine total hits up against Otterbein and converted seven of those hits into runs. MSJ's Keller added a home run to her already successful contest during the fourth inning.

GAME 2

  • The Cardinals bounced back in game two by putting 10 hits up on the board and converted eight of those into runs.

  • This time around Otterbein took the early lead in the first inning earning half of their total runs. The Cards had the bats moving and hit through their entire lineup before ending the inning.

  • Calkins made a strong impression during her first collegiate game earning two hits and five RBI's. The first baseman earned a grand slam home run with two outs against her during the bottom of the third inning to secure the lead.

  • The Cards supported Brook Crosby in the circle for the first five innings of the game, then Haylee Ternovan came in as relief for the remainder of the time before the contest was called for darkness.

Otterbein is set to travel north to Baldwin Wallace on Saturday to jump back into league play, but inclement weather could potentially cause some rescheduling around the OAC.
