WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Cardinals soared on Senior Day under the (mostly) sun of Memorial Stadium against Mount Union, working through a brief rainstorm to beat the Purple Raiders in a 12-7 final.
Otterbein wins for the 10th-consecutive time in series history and notches another critical win in the OAC standings. The Cardinals are now 5-3 within the league in the quest to earn a home game in the upcoming postseason tournament.
Mount Union falls to 3-5 against the conference at the same time, as the top-six teams will soon qualify to continue playing a week from now.
HOW IT TOOK PLACE:
- The Cardinals honored 10 seniors beforehand in Lincoln Troxell, Zach Schonhiutt, Cole Werbrich, Shep Marty, Ty Forney, Adam Clay, Nick Wile, Nick Clay, Lonnie Kelley and Eddie McDonald.
Â
- McDonald then won the opening faceoff but Otterbein faced a 2-1 deficit after a low-scoring first quarter.
Â
- A huge second frame kicked the home team into gear, as the Cards posted seven goals before halftime to vault ahead for an 8-4 double up. Included in the frame was McDonald winning a faceoff and taking it home eight seconds later, Carson Rainone scoring three times and Werbrich dishing out three helpers.
Â
- Max Graham scored in the final seconds of the third quarter but Mount still only trailed 9-6 early in the fourth. But a man-up goal from Rainone helped regain momentum and allowed the home side to hang on down the stretch.
Â
BOX SCORE NOTABLES:
- Troxell had two caused turnovers on the day, reaching 97 for his career to surpass former standout Adam Grumman atop the program record books.
Â
- Both teams had 20 shots on goal but Otterbein held a massive 49-24 edge overall.
Â
- Six Cardinals tallied multi-point days, including Rainone and Werbrich tying for a game-high four.
Â
- McDonald won 16 of 22 faceoffs in rather controlling fashion, receiving nice help from the wings.
Â
- Luke Farthing made 13 saves before exiting in the final minutes to a nice round of applause.
Â
- Mount Union's Logan Gebhart, the OAC's leading scorer, ended with a hat trick.
Â
LOOKING AHEAD:
- Otterbein will hit the road for its regular-season finale in Ada, traveling to play the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern next Wednesday night.
