ADA, Ohio – The Otterbein men's lacrosse team saw its 2023 campaign reach a close Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the OAC Tournament, falling to Ohio Northern for the second time in four days at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The Cardinals, seeded fifth, just couldn't quite find enough offense as the fourth-seeded Polar Bears methodically pulled away for a finite 10-3 decision.
Otterbein ends its season 6-11 overall while host ONU advances to the semifinal round, now standing 12-5 overall as a team.
Fifth-year senior
Nick Clay converted a man-up goal early in the second quarter as the Cards only trailed 3-1 after a tight start for both clubs. Ohio Northern answered twice before the break to carry a 5-1 cushion into halftime.
Only one goal was mustered in the third, also on the ONU side, to give the hosts a five-goal cushion entering the culminating stretch. Otterbein later trailed 8-1 midway through the period and attempted to strike a late push, with
Carson Rainone and
Aidan Moore (man-up) finding the back of the net.
There just wouldn't be enough down to the wire as ONU added a pair of insurance goals shortly after that.
ONU held a slim 32-28 edge in total shots but landed a higher percentage on frame at 18-12.
Luke Farthing made eight saves in the Cardinal goal.
Lincoln Troxell caused three turnovers to surpass 100 for his career and teamed with fellow defenseman
Adam Clay for a combined 17 ground balls… both career-highs individually.
Eddie McDonald, also a senior, went 9 for 17 at the faceoff X. Both teams were whistled for four penalties.
