ALLIANCE, Ohio – It was a tough day up north for the Otterbein softball team, which ran into a tough Mount Union team as the Purple Raiders earned a doubleheader sweep on their home field by scores of 4-0 and 4-0.
The Cardinals fall back to 2-2 in league play as a result while Mount Union jumps to 17-5 overall this season and 4-2 against the OAC.
Dominant pitching was on display in both games for the home side, keeping the Cardinals off the scoreboard in both outings.
Mount Union freshman Kendyll Cahill, already with a perfect game on her resume this season, limited the Cards to just three hits in the opener. Otterbein ace
Bryn Grabowski did her part as well in what became an old-fashioned pitcher's duel, with the game scoreless midway through the sixth.
The Purple Raiders hit the scoreboard with a home run in the frame, and then added some insurance runs moments later on an RBI-double.
Otterbein got the tying run to the plate in the seventh but the last-ditch effort would stall. Cahill improved to 10-2 for the Raiders this year after the complete-game shutout.
The Cards hung close once again in the rematch before Mount pulled away late for a run-rule decision. The Raiders led just 1-0 midway through the fourth but plated four in the bottom half of that inning, and then another three in the next to reach the necessary gap.
Both Otterbein hits occurred in the fourth inning before a tough double play stopped any potential momentum.
The Cards will look to regroup over Easter weekend before finally/hopefully taking on cross-town rival Capital in a doubleheader (Monday afternoon) that has been rescheduled multiple times due to inclement weather.
