Softball Trades 2-0 Decisions at Wilmington in Season Finale

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Otterbein softball team capped its 2023 season with a doubleheader split on the road Saturday afternoon taking the first game at Wilmington before coming up short in the rematch by an identical 2-0 score.

The Cardinals end their spring campaign 16-17-1 overall with an even 9-9 record against the Ohio Athletic Conference.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS (W 2-0):
  • Sophomore Bryn Grabowski was the story of the opener, tossing a complete-game shutout in which she allowed just two hits while striking out 13 Quakers. That effort finishes her season with a dozen complete games and a 1.84 E.R.A.

  • The Cardinals plated both runs in the fourth inning, coming via RB-singles to the left side from a pair of freshmen in Emma Calkins and Rachel Miller.

  • Otterbein had other chances to extend the final winning margin, but would leave 10 runners on base from start to finish as Wilmington's Alexis Stringfellow pitched out of some jams.

  • Caitlin Wilkins and Kendall Sestili both had two-hit efforts offensively.
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS (L 2-0):
  • Another low-scoring matchup was in store for the rematch, as Wilmington grabbed an early 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI poke to right field. A second Quakers attempted to score but was thrown out by Wilkins.

  • Otterbein wasn't able to get a hit off Izzy Rothrock until the bottom of the fifth inning, shortly after the Quakers doubled up the margin (2-0) on another single from Samantha Schwab.

  • The Cards had a baserunner in each of the last three innings but came up empty each time. Wilmington threw out a runner in the fifth, a leadoff walk was to no avail in the sixth, and a one-out walk from pinch hitter Lexi Hart in the seventh was followed by a pair of swinging K's.

  • Wilmington finished with 10 hits in the contest as Rothrock went the distance.
