CHARLESTON, W Va. – A scoreless first half turned into a barrage of scoring for a wild non-conference showdown between Otterbein and Washington & Lee Sunday afternoon, as the two sides settled with a 3-3 draw in a neutral-site contest at Trace Fork Fields.
The gritty Cardinal bunch erased a pair of deficits to salvage a deadlock with the No. 11-ranked Generals, who made the NCAA Sweet 16 last year after winning the ODAC Championship.
Neither side hit the scoreboard in a first half that saw eight total shots, with a shot from Otterbein's
Will Isaac saved bottom center just a few minutes before intermission.
The second half became an absolutely wild scene with both teams chalking up three goals. W&L scored twice in a one-minute span early in the second half, with Lucas Pleasants and Matthew Jenkins playing parts in both.
Otterbein didn't waver, slicing the deficit in half on an unassisted goal from junior
Nick Isaac in the 60th minte. His older brother, Will, then tallied a crucial equalizer 12 minutes later on a double-assist by
Jayden Lunsford and
Jacob Irani.
The Generals leapt back in front in the 75th minute after Pleasants got into the scoring himself, placing the Cards back into a hole. Down but not out, Otterbein scraped its way to another equalizer in the closing stretch as Lunsford converted a set piece from teammate
Mark Wischmeyer in the 84th minute.
A combined six yellow cards were distributed throughout the physical/intense match, with Otterbein receiving four of those. All primary stat categories were near even.
Otterbein will get back inside the friendly confines of Memorial Stadium to begin next week, hosting Franklin College on Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
