MSOC: Cardinals Take Early Lead to Blank Pioneers

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Cardinals extended their winning streak against the Pioneers to five-consecutive victories with a 3-0 win over Transylvania on Saturday afternoon, scoring two early goals and adding a third in the second half to shut out their opponent.

Now with a current record of 2-1-2, the Cardinals played their first true road game of the season and faced Transy for the fifth time since 2018. One year ago, yesterday, Otterbein secured a 3-1 victory over over Transylvania in a similar fashion.

First Half:
  • Nine minutes into the match, Will Isaac passed back to locate his brother open in the midfield. Nick Isaac advanced towards the goal box and fired a shot between the posts (and goalkeeper) for an opening score.

  • Just over 10 minutes later, the scene started with an on-target throw into the box from Carter Ely. Isaac maneuvered the ball out of the crowd to the edge of the box, where he located Mark Wischmeyer. Wischmeyer then delivered a gentle pass, setting up Drew Holman perfectly for a square shot and another goal.

  • The remainder of the first half was a battle, with Otterbein attempting two more shots and the Pioneers ripping it off four times.

Second Half:
  • The second half of the match unfolded as an intense back-and-forth battle between the two teams, each vying for control and possession.

  • Transylvania made several attempts and earned three corner kicks until the 80th minute, when the Cardinals benefited from an own goal for the second consecutive game...

  • A Pioneer defender attempted to loft the ball over the goal but came up short in setting up Jacob Irani, who narrowly avoided a collision with the goalkeeper. Another Pioneer defender, coming from behind to try and clear the ball, inadvertently knocked it into the goal.

  • After that goal, the Pioneers substituted seven different players on the field to finish the game.
STAT CHECK:
  • Otterbein finished with a slight 9-7 advantage on total shots credited, with seven of those being on frame.

  • Casey Thompson stood tall for his second clean sheet of the fall, making a season-high five saves in the net.

Hit The Road:

The Cardinals will make the nearby journey across town to Ohio Wesleyan for their 11th encounter with the Bishops since 2008. The match is set to kick off at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
