WESTERVILLE, Ohio – It was another sweep for the Otterbein volleyball team against Capital to launch the Roush Auto Rivalry Weekend on Friday night, as the Cardinals glided past the Comets by lines scores of 25-15, 25-15, 25-19 in the Rike Center.

The Cards have now beaten their cross-town foe a dozen times in a row, and 21 of the last 22 meetings stretching back to 2009. Otterbein also cruises to 2-0 in league play after beginning the OAC schedule earlier this week at Muskingum.

QUICK RECAP:

Capital, behind former Otterbein assistant coach Rosanna Sguerra, hung tough early in the first set and only trailed 8-6. The Cardinals kicked into gear shortly thereafter with a 10-2 run and settled in.

The middle frame was also 8-6 until Otterbein took control once again, ballooning the cushions to 17-8 and then 23-11.

The Comets wouldn't go easy and pushed the hosts most of the third set. Capital trailed 16-11 before using a 5-0 run to draw even and force Monica Wright to call a timeout. Otterbein quickly regrouped and came soaring out of the mini break, using a kill from Kennedy Hoffman and back-to-back service aces from birthday girl Madison McCoy to retake momentum.

Otterbein won five points in a row and cruised down the stretch.

BIG TIME BOX SCORE:
  • The Cardinals hit a whopping .375 for the match and held Capital to just an .099 efficiency rate on the other side. McCoy (10-1-14) and Kristen Scherger (5-0-8) both hit over .600 for the evening.

  • Libero Amanda Troyer, the reigning OAC Defensive Player of the Week, stood on her head in making 16 digs throughout. Many were acrobatic and needed a bit of range heading to the floor.

  • Otterbein had 10 service aces and was clean the other way, committing no errors from the serve line.

  • Makenzie Schellenberger added double-digit digs (13) for the third time this season.

QUICK TURNAROUND:

The Cards will have a pair of Saturday matches just up north, heading to Wooster for showdowns with DePauw and the host Fighting Scots in the afternoon.
