Volleyball dominates Wilmington in sweep

WILMINGTON — The Otterbein volleyball team put together a dominant showing in a 3-0 sweep at Ohio Athletic Conference foe Wilmington on Wednesday night. The Cardinals won 25-13, 25-17, 25-11.

Otterbein Stat Leaders
  • Senior Kennedy Hoffman and freshman Emerson Baum paced Otterbein in kills with 10 each. Baum hit .600 in the match, and Hoffman hit .529.
  • Senior Amanda Troyer and junior Olivia Vitaz led the team in digs with eight each.
  • Troyer added a career-high eight service aces. The Cardinals recorded 14 aces in the match.
  • Vitaz added 25 assists.
Match Highlights
  • With the score tied at 7-7 in the first set, Otterbein put together a 5-0 run that included two kills from Baum and one each from Vitaz and junior Maddie Mergen for an 12-7 edge. Up 18-13 later in the set, the Cardinals closed out the victory with a 7-0 run highlighted by four service aces from Troyer and a kill from Baum.
  • The Cardinals built a 17-10 edge in the second set and maintained a comfortable lead en route to the 25-17 win capped by back-to-back kills from freshman Chandler Crowell and Hoffman.
  • Otterbein scored nine of the first 10 points in the third set, taking a 9-1 edge on an ace from Troyer. Two kills from sophomore Lexi Scott and an ace and kill from junior Brooke Barb put the Cardinals up 18-7, leading to a Quaker timeout. Up 22-10, Otterbein scored three of the next four points to clinch the sweep. The closing stretch included a kill from Hoffman and an ace from Troyer and was capped by a Wilmington service error.
  • Otterbein finished with 42 kills while hitting .468, and Wilmington finished with 23 kills while hitting .169.
Notables
  • Wednesday marked the first of four matches for Otterbein this week. The Cardinals host Oberlin on Thursday and welcome Muskingum and No. 15 Case Western Reserve to Westerville for a tri-match on Saturday for Senior Day.
  • Otterbein is now 18-0 against Wilmington dating back to 2009, a stretch that includes 17 sweeps.
