Men's Soccer drops 3-1 game at No. 18 Ohio Northern

ADA — The Otterbein men's soccer team fell 3-1 at No. 18 Ohio Northern in Ohio Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night in a rematch of last season's OAC Tournament championship game.

The Basics
  • Records: Otterbein (7-6-2 overall, 3-3-0 OAC), Ohio Northern (11-2-3 overall, 5-0-1 OAC) 
  • Venue: Kerscher Stadium - Ada, Ohio
The Game
  • Ohio Northern took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Brenden Gervers in the 21st minute. 
  • Shortly after, in the 23rd minute, the Cardinals answered with a goal from junior Mitchell Patterson on an assist from senior Nick Isaac to tie the game at 1-1. 
  • ONU's Ryan Sommerfeld ended the first-half scoring with a penalty kick goal in the 42nd minute to put the Polar Bears up 2-1.
  • ONU's Cade Winchester capped the scoring with a goal in the 87th minute for the 3-1 final score.
  • Freshman Jason Villalobos played all 90 minutes in goal for the Cardinals and recorded five saves.
  • Ohio Northern out-shot Otterbein by a 12-9 margin, including 8-3 in shots on goal, and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. 
  Notables
  • Otterbein is now 5-11-3 against Ohio Northern dating back to 2008. The Polar Bears defeated the Cardinals 3-1 in the OAC Tournament championship game last season.
  • Patterson's goal was his second of the season. He now has 21 career points on nine goals and three assists.
  • Ohio Northern is ranked No. 18 nationally in this week's United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Top 25 Poll and No. 2 in the Region VII Poll.
  • Entering Wednesday, Ohio Northern was second in the OAC standings, and Otterbein was in sixth.
  • In his eighth season with the program, Otterbein head coach Jason Griffiths now holds an overall record of 89-38-14.
