Women's Soccer retains Oar with gritty 1-0 rivalry win over Capital

BEXLEY — The Otterbein women's soccer team edged out Capital 1-0 in the Battle for the Oar on Saturday, with senior Lauren Alley's clutch second-half goal sealing the rivalry win.

The Basics
  • Records: Otterbein (8-4-4 overall, 3-2-2 OAC), Capital (5-8-3 overall, 3-2-2 OAC)
  • Venue: Bernlohr Stadium - Bexley, Ohio
The Game
  • In the first half, neither team could find the back of the net, with Capital holding a 7-3 edge in shots.  
  • Otterbein seized the lead in the 63rd minutes as Alley met a well-timed cross from junior Cami McCulty, striking a powerful shot that sailed past Capital's goalkeeper into the net. Alley's goal not only lifted the Cardinals but proved to be the game-winner in the Battle for the Oar.
  • Junior Ella Schwertfager played all 90 minutes in goal for Otterbein, recording five saves in the shutout.
  • Otterbein took a total of 11 shots with four on goal. Capital finished with 14 shots, including five on goal. Both teams had four corner kicks in the game.
  • There was a total of 25 fouls in the game.

Notables

  • Otterbein secured the Oar trophy for the second straight season.
  • Alley notched her second goal of the season and the 10th of her career.
  • McCulty tallied her second assist of the season and second of her career. 
  • Schwertfager boasts a career record of 27-11-9 in goal with 14 shutouts.
  • Entering Saturday, Capital was third in the OAC standings while Otterbein was tied with Heidelberg for fifth place.
  • Otterbein is now 13-10-2 against Capital since 2007.
  • Head coach Brandon Koons, now in his 26th year at Otterbein, holds an all-time record of 346-106-46 with the Cardinals.
