Volleyball sweeps Capital for 13th straight win in Battle for the Oar rivalry

BEXLEY — The Otterbein volleyball team retained the Oar trophy for the 13th straight year with a 3-0 win at rival Capital on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals won 25-21, 25-22, 25-15.

Otterbein Stat Leaders
  • Senior Kennedy Hoffman led the Cardinals in kills with 15. Sophomore Lexi Scott also tallied double-digit kills with 11.
  • Senior Amanda Troyer led Otterbein in digs with 11.
  • Junior Olivia Vitaz had a team-high 28 assists.
  • Freshman Emerson Baum had four of the team's seven service aces in the match and added a team-best four total blocks.
Match Highlights
  • Otterbein used a 9-1 run early in the first set to open up a 15-5 lead. That run included three kills from Scott and one from senior Kristen Scherger to go with two aces from Baum and one from junior Grace Ganz. Capital put together a 5-1 run later in the set to get within three, 21-18, but was unable to get any closer as Otterbein closed out the 25-21 victory.
  • The Cardinals opened up an 18-12 lead midway through the second set before the Comets responded to pull within two, 19-17. A 4-1 Otterbein run that included three kills from Hoffman and one from Baum put the Cardinals up 23-18 en route to the 25-22 win closed out with a kill from Scott.
  • Otterbein scored the first five points of the third set in a run highlighted by a pair of kills from Hoffman. Another 5-0 run later in the set, which included kills from Baum, Scott and junior Maddie Mergen and an ace from Baum, put the Cardinals up 13-5. A 7-1 run highlighted by two kills from Scott and aces from Ganz and sophomore Ashley Kefauver put the visitors up 20-8. With Otterbein leading 24-10, Capital put together a 5-0 run, but the Cardinals capped the sweep with the final point on a Comet service error.
  • Otterbein finished with 42 kills while hitting .267, and Capital finished with 28 kills while hitting .101.

  • Otterbein entered Saturday tied with John Carroll for third place in the OAC standings, while Capital was tied with Wilmington for ninth.
  • Otterbein is 22-1 against Capital dating back to 2009 and has won 13 straight meetings, 12 of which have come by 3-0 scores.
