Four Cardinals place as Men's Wrestling finishes 7th at Ohio Northern Invitational

ADA — Freshmen Luke Dolan, Muhammad Jallaq, Trent VandenEynden and Eli Cassady all placed to lead the Otterbein men's wrestling team to a seventh-place finish at the Ohio Northern Invitational on Saturday.

The Basics
  • A total of 12 schools were represented at the invitational, including host Ohio Northern which is No. 20 nationally in the latest NCAA Division III Team Tournament Rankings from The Open Mat, which were released on Wednesday.
  • Otterbein placed seventh in the team standings, scoring 64 points.
  • Ohio Northern won the team title, scoring 231 points. Olivet was second with 207 points, and Tiffin was third with 173 points.

Otterbein Individual Highlights
  • Dolan was the Cardinals' top performer on Saturday, placing second in the 157-pound bracket with a 4-1 record and scoring 17.5 points. He won by 9-7 decision over Ohio Northern's Jackson Hawker in the first round and won via 17-1 technical fall over Olivet's David Schulte in the second round. In the quarterfinals, he won by 10-3 decision over Waynesburg's Seth Evans and proceeded to defeated Tiffin's Thaddeus Stuckey by 10-9 decision in the semifinals. He ultimately fell to Ohio Northern's Nick Campbell via a 21-5 technical fall in the championship match.
  • Jallaq placed fourth in the 197-pound bracket with a 4-2 record, scoring 16.5 points. After a first-round bye, he was pinned by Washington & Jefferson's Logan Smith in 4:04 in the second round, dropping to the consolation portion of the bracket. After another bye, he pinned Hiram's Jaden Bell in 4:42 and junior teammate Matthew Bachie in 3:47 in the next two rounds before getting a 4-2 decision victory over Heidelberg's Paul Wilson. He defeated Mount St. Joseph's Jermaine Poynter via a 16-3 major decision in the consolation semifinals before being pinned by Tiffin's Dylan McCandless in the third-place match.
  • VandenEynden placed sixth in the 149-pound bracket with a 3-2 record, scoring 13 points. He opened with back-to-back pins of Ohio Wesleyan's Jimmy Baumann in 0:44 and Ohio Northern's Ryan Foster followed by a 12-10 decision victory over Heidelberg's Leon Harrison. He fell via 15-0 technical fall to Olivet's Tyler Herrema in the semifinals to drop into the consolation portion of the bracket and dropped his final two bouts via medical forfeit.
  • Cassady placed eighth in the 174-pound bracket with a 4-3 record, scoring 8.5 points. He opened with a 17-2 technical fall win over Ohio Wesleyan's Andrew Mushkin but was pinned by Tiffin's Jakob Hurley in 1:37 in the second round. He advanced through the consolation rounds via a 21-2 technical fall win over Mount St. Joseph's Elijah Briggs, 13-10 decision win over Mount St. Joseph's Brayden Kuhling and 14-13 decision win over Muskingum's Rugby Meza before being pinned by Olivet's Hayden Koehler in 1:20. Washington & Jefferson's John Starusko won by no contest in the seventh-place match.
  • Junior Carter Mottley posted a 2-2 record with a pin and major decision and scored 4.5 points at 149 pounds.
  • Senior Tamas Eder (141 pounds), juniors Andrew Sas (149), Sam Wegesin (165), Caiden Hooks (184) and Gary Steele (184) and freshman Karson Nail (197) also scored team points for the Cardinals.
