FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Otterbein baseball team ended its lengthy Florida trip on a high note Sunday morning after blasting Ohio Wesleyan 15-3 inside the main stadium at Terry Park, and will now return home with an 8-4 overall record and wealth of early-season experience.
Just as they did on Saturday against Rhode Island College, the Cardinals added three quick runs their first time through the lineup and never trailed. A leadoff single from
Brayden Quincel and tricky bunt from
Gavin Thompson, which gained some awkward spin, began a stretch that saw RBI from
Gavin Wolf,
Logan Ullom and
Caden Kirker.
Otterbein was later protecting a 5-1 lead in the fifth as OWU had an opportunity with two runners on, but a two-out rocket toward the gap was snagged on an acrobatic, lunging play from Kirker darting over from center.
Rain began to spit down from the sky but Otterbein shrugged off the precipitation to blow things wide open in a marathon eighth inning. The top half saw the Cardinals plate nine runs, send 15 batters to the plate and completely unload the bench.
Sophomore
Luke Walter went five strong on the mound to earn his first W of the season, while classmate
Sam Sethna tossed the final three to earn a second save.
Six Cardinals had multi-hit games, led by a 3 for 4 showing off the stick of
Gavin Thompson.
Otterbein is scheduled to resume action this coming Wednesday up at Oberlin, with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
