SB: Cards Split with Ohio Northern in Walk-Off Fashion

WESTERVILLE, Ohio –  In a rescheduled doubleheader, the Otterbein softball team divided games with Ohio Northern in walk-off fashion with a big thanks to Rachel Miller's hit on Thursday evening.

The Cardinals entered the game with a record of 10-14 (4-4 OAC), while the Polar Bears stood at 17-9 (6-2 OAC). Ohio Northern secured a 6-3 victory in the first game, and Otterbein grabbed a 6-5 win in the second game.

GAME ONE RECAP:
  • The Polar Bears got off to a strong start in the 3rd inning, scoring three runs after the Cardinals have an error on a bunt.

  • Ohio Northern secured two more runs after a homerun from Allie Wilson to bring the score to 5-0

  • In the 6th inning, the Cardinals strung together multiple hits. It began with a single from Kenndi Endsley, followed by Caroline Heller's double down the left field line that brought Endsley home. Megan Payne capped off the inning by blasting a home run over the left field fence, closing the gap but falling short as the game ended with a score of 6-3.

GAME TWO RECAP:
  • To start the game, Ohio Northern's Allie Wilson hits a solo homerun in the first inning to put the score to 1-0.

  • The Cardinals responded again with a series of hits, led by Endsley's single followed by a steal to second base. Emma Calkins then delivered a single through the right side, bringing Endsley home to tie the game 1-1.

  • The Polar Bears gained the lead by capitalizing on an error in the 2nd inning. However, Otterbein swiftly reversed the situation by scoring two runs to take the lead in the fourth inning. Calkins played a role with a sacrifice fly that came close to being a home run, helping Otterbein grab the lead.

  • The game saw more back-and-forth action as the Polar Bears added three runs due to an error in the top of the 5th inning, maintaining a 5-3 lead until the Cardinals took the wheel in bottom of the 7th inning.

  • THE PLAY: With two outs, Catlin Wilkins ignited the rally with a single through the left side. Heller and Calkins contributed by loading the bases. Calkins hit a ball to third, but the third baseman fumbled the ball. Isa Lewis capitalized by hitting a ball through the middle, scoring Wilkins. Miller then delivered a hit down the left field line, bringing home the winning run and sealing the victory.

  • Endsley collected three hits, while Heller and Lewis each secured two. Calkins and Lewis both contributed four RBIs.
