Women's Soccer wins road game against Mount St. Joseph

CINCINNATI — Otterbein women's soccer traveled to Mount St. Joseph for a late-night road game, where sophomore Summer Patsko scored twice to lead the Cardinals to a 3-2 victory over the Panthers.

The Basics:
  • Records: Otterbein (3-0-0 overall), MSJ (0-2-0)
  • Venue: Schueler Athletic Complex
The Match:
  • Otterbein sets the tone early by taking two shots on goal within the first two minutes of the game.
  • The Cardinals make an early impact by scoring just three minutes into the game. The sequence starts with a throw-in by Rae Ehrbar to Lauren Alley, who then passes it to Alyssa Lemos. Lemos quickly one touch returns the ball to Alley, who sends it into the goalie box. A Panther defender's attempt to clear the ball but sets the ball right in front of Cami McCulty to capitalize on the chance and score the opening goal.
  • Patsko joins the match in the 30th minute and, less than a minute later, scores to give Otterbein a 2-0 lead. She receives a perfect pass from Lindsey Whitmore, but her initial shot is blocked. In mid-air after the block, Patsko manages to position herself to kick the ball into the net for the goal.
  • Before the half ended, Patsko added another goal. Following a collision between two MSJ defenders, the ball was left loose near the three-yard line, and Patsko managed to slip it past the goalie, giving Otterbein a 3-0 lead.
  • The Panthers scored with 44 seconds remaining in the half on a corner kick, bringing the score to 3-1
  • In the second half, MSJ scored another goal when a Panther fired a shot from the 15-yard line into the top left corner, to limit the lead to one goal.
  • Ella Schwertfager played all 90 minutes in goal for Otterbein and recorded three saves.
Notables:
  • Head coach Brandon Koons, now in his 26th year at Otterbein, holds an all-time record of 341-102-42 with the Cardinals.
  • Patsko scored her first goal of the season and her first collegiate goals.
  • Whitmore records her second career assist.
  • Alley notches her 10th career assist.
  • McCulty tallies her third career goal.
Quotes:
  • Sophomore Summer Patsko on her goals: "It feels great to win and keep our undefeated streak going. I'm glad I could contribute but without my teammates making the final perfect passes I couldn't have done it. The goals weren't pretty, but they were the result of hard work from everybody"
  • Head coach Brandon Koons on Patsko's second goal: "The quality and timing of their 2nd goal could have broken us, but I'm so happy it happened, because we got better over the next 35 minutes."
  • Koons on the team's win: "Mount Saint Joseph is a good team. I didn't feel comfortable when we were up 3-0. We were happy and we earned the goals, but it didn't feel like 3-0. A win and improvement, it was a good night for sure."
