Four earn OAC Athlete of the Week honors

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Four Otterbein University athletes have been named the OAC Athletes of the Week in their respective sports, as announced on Monday afternoon. Cross country swept the awards with Brenna Lay and Caleb Rafferty earning the honor, as football's Matt Griffin and volleyball's Olivia Vitaz were also recognized.

Lay and Rafferty earned the honor following their performances at the Wild Bill Invitational Friday night, hosted by Wright State. Lay, a sophomore, took fifth in the women's 5K race, clocking an 18:44.4. Rafferty followed in the men's 8K with a third place finish, crossing at 25:53.9. Lay, Rafferty and the Otterbein cross country teams will host the Ohio Athlete Conference Championships on Saturday. The men's race will take place at 11 a.m. with the women's race to begin at noon.

Griffin propelled the football team to a 20-19 victory over Capital in the coveted Battle for the Oar. The junior rushed for a career-best 129 yards on 24 carries and scored all three Otterbein touchdowns in Saturday's win. Griffin and the football team continue OAC play when they head to Heidelberg on Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.

Vitaz led the No. 22 ranked volleyball team to a 2-0 week with wins over Ohio Northern and Capital. In the win over ONU, the senior dished out 57 assists, tying her career-best from a season ago. Vitaz also recorded 15 digs and six kills in the match. She added 23 assists in Saturday's sweep of Capital. The Cardinals will host Heidelberg on Friday for a 7 p.m. match.
