Late rally comes up short at John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – After a furious comeback to force a fifth set, the No. 22 Otterbein University volleyball team fell in five sets to John Carroll University. The regular season ends for the Cardinals with a 22-5 overall record.

JCU held all of the momentum in the first two sets. After claiming a 26-24 victory in the opening set, the Blue Streaks took the second set 25-21. With the Cardinals struggling in the first two sets offensively, the hosts were able to put themselves within one set of winning the match.

In the third set, Otterbein kept the match alive with a 25-20 win. Surviving a late run from the hosts, back to back kills from Emerson Baum sent the match into a fourth set. Otterbein rolled to a 25-5 win in the fourth set. As a team, the Cardinals attacked at a .611 clip in the fourth, as four of the team's eight service aces came in the set.

Despite breaking out to an early lead in the fifth set, a late push from John Carroll secured the 15-12 upset for the Blue Streaks.

Baum's 21 kills led the Cardinals, as Lexi Scott added 11. Defensively, Otterbein was led by 24 digs from Ashley Kefauver. Emma Steiger collected 16, as Olivia Vitaz finished with 13 and Grace Ganz added 12. Vitaz also dished out 21 assists as junior Elise Adelman finished with 26.

Sophomore Chandler Crowell led Otterbein with five total blocks. Baum added four.

After securing the No. 2 seed in the OAC Tournament, the Cardinals have earned a bye and will be idle until Thursday, Nov. 13. The Cardinals will host the winner of the Heidelberg-Muskingum game at The Rike Center.
