Women's basketball wins handily in season debut

ANDERSON, Ind. – For the third consecutive season, the Otterbein University women's basketball team won its season opener, coming away with an 81-60 victory at Anderson University.

Cameron Sparks shined in her collegiate debut, finishing a rebound shy of a double-double. The freshman led the Cardinals with 16 points on a 7 of 10 shooting effort, bringing down nine rebounds in the win. Sparks also collected a team-best three steals. Kyla Irby and Mattie Walburn also finished in double figures, with Irby adding 15 points and Walburn dropping 13.

In a first quarter halted by fouls, Otterbein had trouble finding its momentum early on. After shooting just under 30 percent in the opening period, the Cardinals shot at least 42 percent in each of the final three quarters. At the end of one, the Ravens held a slim 16-14 lead.

A layup from Nicole Terry three minutes into the second quarter gave the Cardinals the lead for good. That bucket was followed by a three off the hand of Abby Rawlings to swing the momentum back into Otterbein's favor. Rawlings and Terry each totaled eight points off the bench in the win.

Opening the new half on a 6-0 run, the visitors inflated their lead to double digits and would maintain that pressure throughout the rest of the game.

Rawlings and Kiara Hudgins combined for nine assists in the win. The Cardinals racked up 20 second chance points, led by eight offensive boards from Madilyn Stechschulte. The sophomore finished with a Cardinal-high of 11 rebounds. Otterbein cashed in on Anderson miscues, scoring 18 points off 17 turnovers.

Otterbein will head to Ohio Wesleyan Monday for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
