Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball shines in season debut

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – A late run in the first half gave the Otterbein University men's basketball team all the momentum it needed, defeating Wittenberg 70-52 in its season opener. Both Julian Heckman and Micah Germany scored 15 points to lead Otterbein – a new career-best for Germany.

This marks the fifth straight season where the Cardinals have won their first game of the year. The win also snaps a six game losing skid against Wittenberg.

Otterbein ended the final eight minutes of the first half on a 12-3 run, inflating the lead to 36-21 at the half. Noah Gamble sank a pair of free throws before the Cardinals got two straight defensive stops. Heckman found freshman Dominic Theado in transition, giving Otterbein a 28-18 lead with 6:50 remaining in the first half.

Baskets from Troy Scowden, Germany, and Jarius Jones helped the hosts continue to control the momentum and force the Tigers into turnovers at the other end. In the first half, the Cardinals shot 40 percent from the floor.

Otterbein stretched its advantage to as many as 19 points midway through the second half and never looked back.  On the day, Otterbein scored 19 points off 14 Tiger turnovers.

The Cardinals received 24 points from its bench, compared to seven from Wittenberg. Scowden and Jones were forces inside, as Scowden added 10 points and brought down seven rebounds, while Jones hauled in a team-high 10 rebounds.

Freshman Carter Piatt-Brown had an impressive collegiate debut, scoring eight points while adding three steals and dishing out a Cardinal-best five assists.

On Thursday, the Cardinals will travel to Mt. St. Joseph for a 7 p.m. tip against the Lions.
