Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Heckman's second straight double-double leads Otterbein over OWU

WESTERVILLE, Ohio Julian Heckman's second double-double in as many games helped the Otterbein University men's basketball team cruise to a 77-54 win over Ohio Wesleyan University. The senior turned in a 14-point, 10-assist performance, marking a new career-high in dimes, also grabbing six rebounds and adding four steals.

Jarius Jones led all players with a career-best 19 points off the bench. In just 17 minutes, Jones went 8 of 12 from the floor and pulled down five rebounds.

From the jump, Otterbein was in complete control, holding a double digit lead less than 10 minutes into the contest. OWU cut the Cardinal lead to five, but the hosts answered with a 14-3 run to end the first half and build a 39-23 advantage at the break. Five different Cardinals scored in that stretch, led by Jones and Chase Garito each scoring four points.

Otterbein opened the second half the same way they ended the first half, as a 3-pointer off the hand of Carter Piatt-Brown inflated the lead to 19. Piatt-Brown finished with nine points with a perfect 3 for 3 from beyond the arc. The Cardinals continued to build on the lead, extending to as many as 27 points.

Dominic Theado contributed 10 points, while Troy Scowden grabbed a season-high seven rebounds. Led by 10 from Heckman, the 23 assists is the most for the Cardinals as a team this year. Heckman's 6.1 assists per game currently leads the OAC and ties him for seventh in Division III.

As a team, Otterbein shot 51.8 percent from the field compared to OWU's 39 percent. The Cardinals improve to 8-2 on the season, their best start since the 2022-23 season.

The Cardinals will be idle until Dec. 29 when they host the Smokey Ballenger Classic. Otterbein will face off against Allegheny College at 5 p.m.
