Callahan leads Men's Wrestling at Wheaton (Ill.) Pete Willson Invitational

WHEATON, Ill. — Senior Cale Callahan placed seventh at 174 pounds to lead the Otterbein men's wrestling team in a loaded field of competition at the two-day Wheaton (Ill.) Pete Willson Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Freshmen Trent VandenEynden and Luke Dolan and juniors Logan Cormell and Gary Steele also scored points for the Cardinals.

  • Otterbein placed 26th of 30 teams in the event, scoring 18.5 points. No. 7 Wisconsin-Eau Claire won the team title with 150.5 points. No. 14 Wisconsin-Whitewater was second with 142.5 points, and No. 3 Wisconsin-La Crosse was third with 112.5 points.

Otterbein Individual Highlights
  • 174: Callahan placed seventh and scored 7.5 team points. He opened with a win via 15-2 major decision over Ohio Northern's Anthony Lahoski and followed that with a 4-2 decision victory over Chicago's Hutch Lynett. He fell by 6-3 decision to Millikin's Dejon Glaster in the quarterfinals to fall into the consolation bracket. Callahan won his next bout, a 10-8 decision over Elmhurst's Caleb Smith, before falling via 11-3 major decision to Wisconsin-Lacrosse's Eddie Simes. In the seventh-place match, he defeated John Carroll's Aiden Ashburn via a 6-4 decision.
  • 149: VandenEynden contributed 5 team points, advancing to the third round of the consolation bracket. He opened with an 18-2 tech fall loss to Ferrum's Cameron Curva but rebounded to take his next two bouts, pinning Wisconsin-Platteville's Trent DuMont in 2:25 and Alma's Aiden Tornberg in 4:27. He fell to Mount Union's Nick Nettleton in the third round of the consolation bracket via a 16-0 technical fall.
  • 165: Cormell scored 3 team points. After an opening-round bye, he fell to Wisconsin-Whitewater's Brayden Peet via 19-3 tech fall. He then won his first two consolation bouts, a 4-0 decision victory Rhode Island's Scott Lallas and an injury default win over North Central's Armando Murillo, before falling via pin to Messiah's Keegan Demarest.
  • 157: Dolan contributed 2 team points. He opened with a 14-3 major decision win over John Carroll's Ryan Forrest before falling via 14-1 major decision to Messiah's Clay Gainer. In the consolation bracket, he was pinned by Roanoke's Andrew McDougal.
  • 184: Steele rounded out the scoring for Otterbein with 1 point. He opened with a 16-0 tech fall defeat to Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Nlall Schoenfelder. He won his first two consolation bouts, via 8-6 decision over Mount St. Joseph's Alec Hall and 8-2 decision over Ferrum's Joseph Toner, before being pinned by Heidelberg's Owen Frizzell in the ensuing round.
