Men's Wrestling finishes with five placers at JCU Open

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — Led by freshman Luke Dolan, the Otterbein men's wrestling team finished with five placers at the John Carroll Open on Sunday. Juniors Andrew Sas, Carter Mottley, Owen Crabtree and Matthew Bachie also finished on the podium.

The Basics Otterbein Individual Highlights
  • 157 Blue Bracket: Dolan placed second, posting a 3-1 record in his bracket. He won by 15-0 tech fall over John Carroll's Drew Connelly in the opening round and defeated Lake Erie's Arthur Croom by 12-6 decision in the quarterfinals. He won by 5-3 decision over Tiffin's Thaddeus Stuckey in the semifinal before being pinned by Ohio University's Charles Spinning in the championship match.
  • 141 Blue Bracket: Sas placed fourth in his bracket with a 3-2 record. He pinned John Carroll's Damienn Patnaik in 3:31 in the opening round and defeated Tiffin's Bryson Cole by 17-2 tech fall in the quarterfinals. He was pinned by Lake Erie's Joey Romano in the semifinals, dropping to the consolation bracket. He won by 15-10 decision over West Liberty's Ridge Kidder in the consolation semis before falling by 10-9 decision to Mount Union's Ridge Barkley in the third-place match.
  • 149 Blue Bracket: Mottley placed fourth in his bracket with a 2-2 record. After an opening-round bye, he pinned unattached wrestler Brady Willman in 1:59 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he fell by 12-5 decision to Kent State's Thomas Bock. He defeated Gannon's Jeremiah Sawicky by 3-0 decision in the consolation semifinals before falling to West Liberty's Shawn Young by 6-4 decision in the third-place match.
  • 149 Navy Bracket: Crabtree placed fourth in his bracket with a 2-2 record. He dropped to the consolation bracket after falling via 15-0 tech fall to Lake Erie's Egidio DiFazio in the opening round. He then pinned Syracuse Club's Josh Collado in 6:33 and defeated Mount Union's Carter Hill by 7-6 decision before being pinned by Hillsdale's David Gregory in the third-place match.
  • 197 Blue Bracket: Bachie placed fourth in his bracket with a 2-2 record. After an opening-round bye, he defeated West Liberty's James Standish by 3-2 decision before falling to Hillsdale's Stephen Petersen via 14-5 major decision in the semifinals. In the consolation semifinals, he defeated unattached wrestler Gabe Enoch by 7-6 decision before falling to Lake Erie's Tyler Shellenbarger via 15-4 major decision in the third-place match.
  • 285 Blue Bracket: Freshman Cooper McKean did not place but posted a 2-2 record with both of his victories coming by fall.

  • Ranked No. 20 at 174 pounds in the latest NCAA Division III rankings from The Open Mat, senior Cale Callahan is 13-2 on the season. He has two tech falls and three major decisions on the year.
  • In the latest NWCA NCAA Division III Individual Region 4 Rankings, Callahan is No. 1 at 174 pounds, junior Gary Steele is No. 7 at 184 pounds, Dolan is No. 8 at 157 pounds, and senior Billy Reed-Bodey is No. 8 at 285 pounds.
  • Dolan leads the team in victories on the season with an 18-9 overall record. He has six falls, three tech falls and two major decisions.
  • Freshman Trent VandenEynden is 14-10 on the season with seven falls and three tech falls.
