Softball rallies for wins over Hiram, Penn State Berks

KISSIMMEE, Fla. —The Otterbein softball team fought back on Tuesday, rallying in both games of a doubleheader to secure a 12-9 win over Hiram and a 9-8 victory over Penn State Berks at The Spring Games.

The Basics
  • Records: Otterbein (4-2 overall), Hiram (2-2 overall), Penn State Berks (2-4)

Otterbein Stat Leaders vs. Hiram
  • Graduate student Caroline Heller delivered in key moments, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs to lead the team in run production.
  • Sophomore Maggie McVicker matched Heller with four RBIs, recording two hits in five at-bats.
  • Freshman Evie Lehman delivered a solid relief performance, pitching 2.1 innings while allowing four hits, two earned runs, and two walks. She recorded one strikeout and kept the damage minimal, forcing two flyouts and three groundouts on 26 pitches. 
  • Sophomore Kennedi Endsley reached base effectively, scoring four runs on two hits in three at-bats while driving in one RBI.
  • Junior Caitlin Wilkins scored four runs on two hits in three at-bats while driving in one RBI.
Game 1 - Otterbein 12, Hiram 8
  • 1st Inning: Otterbein took an early lead as McVicker drove in Endsley with an RBI single, making it 1-0. However, Hiram responded swiftly with two RBI singles, taking a 2-1 lead.
  • 2nd Inning: A costly fielding error by Otterbein allowed two unearned runs to score, extending Hiram's lead to 4-1.
  • 3rd Inning: Heller brought the Cardinals closer with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Endsley, making it 4-3.
  • 4th Inning: The Terriers struck again with a two-run double to right field, increasing Hiram's lead to 6-2.
  • 6th Inning: Otterbein rallied in the top of the 6th, scoring four runs to tie the game at 6-6. Senior Isa Lewis doubled to start things off, and Heller delivered a two-run double to tie it up. However, Hiram quickly answered with a three-run rally in the bottom half, regaining the lead at 9-6.
  • 7th Inning: Otterbein completed a thrilling comeback with a five-run rally in the 7th inning. Endsley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in a run to make it 7-9. Then Wilkins drew another bases-loaded walk, cutting the deficit to one at 8-9. Heller followed with a single through the left side, tying the game at 9-9. Finally, McVicker capped the comeback with a clutch three-run double to right field, sealing the victory for Otterbein at 12-9.
  • Otterbein out-hit Hiram by a 15-12 margin. Both teams committed one error.
Otterbein Stat Leaders vs. Penn State Berks
  • Endsley had a standout performance, going 3-for-4 at the plate. She scored three runs and drove in one RBI.
  • Wilkins went 2-for-3 with one run scored and two RBIs. 
  • Calkins delivered when it mattered, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs. She contributed a sacrifice fly and a clutch hit, helping Otterbein close the gap on the scoreboard.
  • McVicker had a powerful performance, finishing 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Her biggest moment came on a triple to center field, which brought in two runs and helped Otterbein complete its comeback.
  • McVicker earned the win with a strong relief appearance in the circle, keeping Penn State off the board. She struck out three batters and didn't allow any walks.
Game 2 - Otterbein 9, Penn State Berks 8
  • 1st Inning: Otterbein scored one with McVicker starting it off with a walk, and junior Emma Calkins grounded out to shortstop. Wilkins then executed a sacrifice, driving in Endsley, who had reached earlier on a walk and advanced on an error by the second baseman, 1-0. 
  • 2nd Inning: Otterbein scored three runs. Wilkins singled in Endsley, then Endsley singled in Newsome. A sacrifice fly by Eichorn brought in Miller (4-0)
  • 4th inning: The Nittany Lions had scored several runs. A double had driven in a runner from second, followed by another double that had brought in two more runs. After a pop-up, another double had scored two more, and a walk had added another RBI. A fielding error had allowed an additional unearned run to cross the plate, bringing their total to 7 runs, while Otterbein had remained at 4. 
  • 5th Inning: Penn State hit a single to left, bringing in a run (8-4). Calkins followed with a single to left, driving in Endsley (8-5). Sindledec then reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Wilkins to cross the plate (8-6).
  • 6th Inning:  Calkins hit a sacrifice fly, scoring senior Chloe Clark (8-7). McVicker tripled to center, bringing in Wilkins and Endsley, completing the comeback.
  • Both teams had nine hits. Otterbein committed one error to Penn State Berks' two.

  • Heller has 122 hits, 31 doubles and 67 RBIs in her Otterbein career.
  • Lewis has 84 hits and 46 RBIs in her Otterbein career.
  • Miller has 54 hits in her Otterbein career.
  • Named the OAC Rookie of the Year in 2024, Endsley has 53 career hits.
  • Head coach Bruce Anderson is in his fourth year at Otterbein and has an all-time record of 57-54-1 at the helm of the Cardinals.
