Softball ends spring games with narrow losses to Bowdoin (Maine), Loras (Iowa)

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Otterbein softball team fought hard but suffered narrow losses of 13-12 to Bowdoin (Maine) and 2-1 to Loras (Iowa) on Friday, concluding its 10-game schedule at The Spring Games.

The Basics
  • Records: Otterbein (6-4 overall), Bowdoin (5-3 overall) Loras (8-6 overall) 
  • Venue: Fortune Road Athletic Complex - Kissimmee, Fla.
Otterbein Stat Leaders vs. Bowdoin
  • Sophomore Kennedi Endsley delivered a standout performance, going 3-for-5 with four runs, an RBI, and a stolen base.
  • Junior Emma Calkins was perfect at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with four RBIs, a double, and a sacrifice fly.
  • Graduate student Caroline Heller contributed significantly, going 1-for-3 with four RBIs, a double, and a walk, including a key bases-clearing hit.
  • Junior Avery Yoder went 1-for-1 with two runs, a double, and a walk, playing a crucial role in the offense.
Game 1 - Bowdoin 13, Otterbein 12
  • 1st Inning: Bowdoin struck first on an error, but Endsley evened the score on Calkins' sacrifice fly. Junior Rachel Miller then gave Otterbein the lead with an RBI single, putting the Cardinals ahead 2-1
  • 2nd Inning: Otterbein added to its lead as Endsley drove in Yoder, followed by Wilkins bringing home freshman Bri Dowell with a groundout. Calkins capped the inning with an RBI single, extending the advantage to 5-1.
  • 3rd Inning: Bowdoin plated two runs, but Otterbein responded with a five-run outburst. Wilkins drew a bases-loaded walk, and Caroline Heller cleared the bases with a three-run double. Calkins and sophomore Maggie McVicker each added RBI hits, pushing the Cardinals ahead 11-3.
  • 4th Inning: Bowdoin cut into the lead with a two-run homer, but Otterbein remained on top 11-5.
  • 5th Inning: The Polar Bears mounted a six-run comeback to tie the game. Otterbein regained the lead with an RBI groundout from Heller and an RBI single from Calkins, making it 13-11.
  • 6th Inning: Bowdoin responded again, scoring twice to even the game at 13-13.
  • 7th Inning: The Polar Bears plated the go-ahead run in the top of the inning, and Otterbein was unable to rally in the bottom half.
  • Bowdoin out-hit Otterbein by a 19-11 margin. Otterbein committed four errors to Bowdoin's three.
Otterbein Stat Leaders vs. Loras
  • Endsley was the standout hitter for Otterbein, going 2-for-3 with no RBIs. She was the only player to collect multiple hits, showcasing a solid offensive performance despite the lack of scoring.
  • Heller contributed with one hit in three at-bats. While she didn't bring in any runs, she was one of the few players who managed to get on base, adding to the team's offense.
  • Calkins also finished 1-for-3 at the plate. 
Game 2 - Loras 2, Otterbein 1 
  • 1st Inning: Otterbein took the lead early when Endsley crossed the plate following a failed pickoff attempt and a throwing error by the catcher, resulting in an unearned run. Loras couldn't capitalize and went scoreless in the inning.
  • 2nd to 6th Inning: Both teams struggled offensively, with neither side able to score. Solid pitching kept the game scoreless through these middle frames.
  • 7th Inning: The Cardinals failed to add any runs in the top of the 7th. In the bottom half, Loras seized the advantage with a bunt single that brought in 2 runs, helped by a throwing error to home.
  • Both teams had five hits. Otterbein committed three errors to Loras' one.
Notables 
  • Heller has 128 hits, 34 doubles and 73 RBIs in her Otterbein career. She is tied for fifth all-time in doubles.
  • Lewis has 86 hits, 47 RBIs and 28 steals in her Otterbein career.
  • Named the OAC Rookie of the Year in 2024, Endsley has 59 hits and 23 steals in her Otterbein career.
  • Miller has 56 hits in her Otterbein career.
  • Head coach Bruce Anderson is in his fourth year at Otterbein and has an all-time record of 59-56-1 at the helm of the Cardinals.
