Baseball caps spring break trip with loss to Eastern Connecticut State

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Otterbein baseball team fell 11-7 to Eastern Connecticut State on Sunday to close out its nine-game spring break slate in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

The Basics
  • Records: Otterbein (7-8 overall), Eastern Connecticut State (5-3 overall)

Otterbein Stat Leaders
  • Senior Zac Taylor led the Otterbein offense with three hits, one RBI and one run.
  • Graduate student Jamie Perebzak tallied two hits, one RBI and one run.
  • Senior Charlie Greenlief posted one hit and two RBIs.
Game Highlights
  • The Warriors scored two runs in each of the first two innings and added two more in the top of the third for a 6-0 lead before Otterbein plated three runs in the bottom of the third. Perebzak hit a one-out RBI single, and Greenlief added a two-out 2-RBI single.
  • The Warriors added two runs in the top of the sixth and one in the seventh for a 9-3 edge. After they plated two more in the eighth, the Cardinals scored in the bottom of the frame on a double play that brought Taylor home from third after he and senior Jake Brown led off with back-to-back singles.
  • The Cardinals capped the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the ninth after loading the bases with no outs. Senior Tyler Biddle hit a leadoff single and advanced to third after back-to-back walks to graduate student Caden Kirker and sophomore Lance Preston. Pinch-hitting, senior Max Latkovski followed with an RBI single, and Kirker and Preston later scored on a Warrior error that allowed Taylor to reach base with two outs.
  • Eastern Connecticut State out-hit Otterbein by a 17-9 margin. Otterbein committed one error to Eastern Connecticut State's three.
Notables 
  • The Cardinals posted a 5-4 during their spring break trip.
  • Named the OAC Player of the Year and CSC Second Team Academic All-America in 2024, Perebzak is tied for fifth all-time at Otterbein in hits (209) and ranks fourth in doubles (47), 11th in home runs (20) and third in RBIs (175).
  • Senior Logan Ullom has 95 hits, 24 doubles and 44 RBIs in his Otterbein career. He has a team-high 23 hits and eight doubles this season.
  • Head coach George Powell is in his 26th year at Otterbein and has an all-time record of 615-428-1 at the helm of the Cardinals. He is a six-time OAC Coach of the Year honoree and has coached the Cardinals to three OAC regular-season championships and six OAC Tournament titles.
