Baseball sweeps doubleheader at Capital to claim Oar

COLUMBUS — The Otterbein baseball team swept a doubleheader at Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital on Saturday to keep the Oar trophy in its possession. The Cardinals opened the day with a 6-4 victory before closing out the sweep with a 13-9 win.

Otterbein Stat Leaders - Game 1
  • Sophomore Nolan James finished with two hits and one RBI.
  • Senior Logan Ullom added two hits.
  • Freshman Calvin Mabry posted a double, one RBI and two runs.
  • Senior Zac Taylor tallied one hit, one RBI and one run.
  • Senior Max McCann posted one hit and two runs.
  • Senior Charlie Greenlief added a double and RBI.
  • Senior Bryson Bell earned the win on the mound after pitching four scoreless relief innings and recording five strikeouts.

Game 1 Highlights - Otterbein 6, Capital 4
  • Capital scored two runs in the first and one each in the second and third to build an early 4-0 lead.
  • Otterbein tied the score with four runs in the top of the fourth, which was highlighted by RBI singles from Taylor and James.
  • Neither team scored over the next two innings, but the Cardinals plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh for what proved to be the winning margin. With two outs, Mabry hit an RBI double, and Greenlief followed with an RBI double of his own.
  • The Comets put runners on first and third with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but the trailing runner was caught stealing second to end the game.
  • Otterbein out-hit Capital by a 9-8 margin. Otterbein committed four errors to Capital's three.

  • Ullom tallied three hits, including two doubles, to go with two RBIs and two runs.
  • Graduate student Jamie Perebzak posted two hits, including a home run, to go with three RBIs and three runs.
  • James recorded two hits, including a double, to go with three RBIs, one run and one steal.
  • Taylor added one hit, two runs and one RBI.
  • Senior Tyler Biddle tallied two hits and two runs.
  • Freshman Daniel Uhl posted two hits.
  • Mabry added a double and two runs.
  • Junior Sam Sethna earned the win on the mound, pitching three relief innings and recording one strikeout.
Game 2 Highlights - Otterbein 13, Capital 9
  • After Capital built a 3-0 lead through three innings, Otterbein plated four runs in the top of the fourth, which was highlighted by a 2-RBI double from James and an RBI double from Ullom.
  • The Comets added a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score at 4-4.
  • The Cardinals took a 6-4 lead in the top of the fifth courtesy of a two-run homer from Perebzak. But the Comets answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame for a 7-6 edge.
  • Otterbein tied the score at 7-7 in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from Perebzak.
  • After a scoreless seventh, the Cardinals scored five runs in the top of the eighth, which was highlighted by RBI singles from Greenlief, Ullom and James.
  • Capital added a run in the bottom of the eighth to cut the deficit to 12-8, but Otterbein added a run in the top of the ninth for a 13-8 edge.
  • The Comets capped the scoring with a run in the bottom of the ninth as the Cardinals secured the 13-9 win.
  • Otterbein out-hit Capital by a 14-11 margin. Otterbein committed one error to Capital's six.
Notables 
  • Named the OAC Player of the Year and CSC Second Team Academic All-America in 2024, Perebzak is tied for third all-time at Otterbein in hits (217) and doubles (47), is tied for eighth in home runs (23) and ranks second in RBIs (184). Jim Allen (1986-89) is the program's all-time leader in RBIs with 189.
  • Ullom has 108 hits, 26 doubles and 49 RBIs in his Otterbein career. He has a team-high 36 hits and 10 doubles this season.
  • Taylor has a team-high 20 RBIs on the season.
  • Head coach George Powell is in his 26th year at Otterbein and has an all-time record of 620-430-1 at the helm of the Cardinals. He is four wins away from tying Dick Fishbaugh (624) for most coaching wins in program history and fifth all-time in OAC history. Powell is a six-time OAC Coach of the Year honoree and has coached the Cardinals to three OAC regular-season championships and six OAC Tournament titles.
  • Otterbein is 28-6 against Capital dating back to 2009 and has won 10 straight games against the Comets.
